Off-Site Storage and Logistics Save Developer Jobsite Space in Downtown L.A. Build

08.26.2024

In the heart of downtown Los Angeles, a developer faced significant logistical challenges managing the storage and distribution of materials for a large-scale construction project. OneSource Distributors’ Pro Logistic Services (PLS) provided a comprehensive solution to streamline these operations, ensuring efficiency and accuracy from job materials acquisition to storage to delivery.

The Problem

A developer required space and organization for lighting fixtures and controls for 1,200 apartment units within a block of new-construction apartments in downtown Los Angeles. The jobsite did not have on-site storage for these materials, and the freight elevator was not yet up and running. The developer also did not have an off-site warehouse.

The Solution

In response to the developer’s lack of on-site or off-site storage or an operational freight elevator, OneSource provided a tailored storage and distribution solution through their Pro Logistic Services.

The lighting fixtures and controls purchased through OneSource were redirected to a PLS secured warehouse on the customer’s behalf for inspection, organization, and storage. The PLS team verified the job materials arrived in good condition and that the quality and quantity matched what was expected. All job materials were then locked in bins and shelved in dedicated locations.

Prior to delivery to the jobsite, all job materials including fixtures, controls, receptacles, and faceplates were pre-organized and kitted into their own distinguished box and labeled by apartment number. Extra cardboard and Styrofoam were removed during this process. Job materials were then loaded into OSHA-approved Crane Carts for ease of transportation around the jobsite without requiring the use of a freight elevator.

The PLS team then delivered the job materials to the job site via their truck and driver. As the customer had to shut down part of the street to receive these job materials, the PLS driver expertly coordinated with the customer’s jobsite team to provide a smooth delivery experience.

Inventory releases and financial documents were uploaded to OneSource’s Digital Job Center throughout the project for easy anytime, anywhere access by the customer.

Results

OneSource’s Pro Logistic Services overcame jobsite storage and intra-site movement obstacles, ensured materials accuracy pre-site delivery and installation, and maximized efficiency through box and Crane Cart organization. Throughout the process, the customer benefited from the following:

  • Over 17,000 light fixtures and 2,000 control units from 15 manufacturers were received, inspected, stored, and delivered to the jobsite.
  • Pre-organizing job materials streamlined job efficiency, as only necessary items were delivered to each apartment unit. All materials were accurately counted and organized, eliminating extra or missing items.
  • Despite the challenges of navigating a busy downtown environment, the PLS driver coordinated precisely with the customer’s jobsite team in advance, allowing for a brief and efficient delivery process that minimized downtime and street closure.
  • The customer did not need to dispose of extra cardboard and Styrofoam, saving space in jobsite dumpsters and saving time and labor costs disposing of these materials at the jobsite.
  • The customer used crane attachments to lift material to upper floors of buildings, saving valuable time and labor as materials may have otherwise needed to be transported up and down stairs.
  • The customer was able to obtain insights into their inventory releases and financial documents directly through OneSource’s Digital Job Center, allowing easy access to key project information.
